The fashion industry is facing a growing problem with microplastics, tiny particles shed from synthetic textiles and products, polluting the marine environment. To combat this issue, several fashion brands are pioneering the use of sustainable alternatives to plastic.
Toms, a well-known shoe company, has been incorporating recycled ocean-bound plastics into their products since 2020. They partner with Repreve, a company that supplies recycled fiber made from post-consumer plastic bottles. This not only helps reduce plastic waste but also lowers greenhouse gas emissions and water usage.
Another area where fashion brands are making a difference is in packaging. Traditionally, clothes are shipped in single-use plastic bags, which are not only wasteful but also contribute to microplastic pollution. Brands like Burton are looking into seaweed-based packaging materials as a sustainable alternative. Seaweed is a readily available resource and the packaging made from it can replicate the look and feel of plastic while being completely biodegradable.
These efforts are still in their early stages, but they represent a significant step towards a more sustainable fashion industry.
