Only 13.3% of Plastic Packaging Gets Recycled. Here’s What 130 Organizations Are Doing About It.
The beauty industry generates an overwhelming amount of plastic waste, with 120 billion units of plastic packaging produced annually. Despite efforts, the U.S. recycling rate for plastic packaging remains at a low 13.3%. The U.S. Plastics Pact, a coalition of 130 organizations including major brands like L’Oréal, Unilever, and Walmart, is working to change this
The beauty industry generates an overwhelming amount of plastic waste, with 120 billion units of plastic packaging produced annually. Despite efforts, the U.S. recycling rate for plastic packaging remains at a low 13.3%. The U.S. Plastics Pact, a coalition of 130 organizations including major brands like L’Oréal, Unilever, and Walmart, is working to change this through ambitious sustainability targets.
Their 2023-2024 Impact Report highlights progress toward eliminating problematic plastics, increasing recyclability, and integrating more post-consumer recycled (PCR) content. Key achievements include reducing unnecessary materials, improving packaging design for circularity, and launching innovations like NewMatter, a resin made entirely from recycled beauty packaging.
With Roadmap 2.0, the Pact is setting new targets for 2030, aiming to eliminate virgin plastic use by 30% and expand reusable packaging systems. By prioritizing data-driven strategies, collaboration, and Extended Producer Responsibility policies, they seek to drive systemic change and build a true circular economy for plastics.
