Summer vacations should be a time to relax and unwind, but many people feel pressure to get in shape beforehand. This pressure is especially strong for younger generations, with 51% of Gen Z respondents feeling the need to look a certain way on vacation. Social media is a major culprit, with over half of Gen Z respondents attributing their pressure to get fit to social media influence.
Women are also more likely than men to feel pressure to get in shape for vacation, with 42% of women reporting feeling this way compared to 31% of men. This pressure can lead people to avoid vacations altogether, with over half of respondents (56%) admitting that their body image has made them want to cancel vacation plans.
Experts recommend focusing on long-term health and body positivity rather than quick fixes to achieve a “summer body.” Setting realistic goals, prioritizing self-care, and developing a healthy relationship with food and exercise are all important steps to take. Vacations should be a time to celebrate our bodies and enjoy the company of loved ones, not a time to stress about achieving unrealistic beauty standards.
